Meal Delivery Box Mania
Hands down, one of the best things we've done this year is jump into the meal delivery box craze. And we've tried them all: Home Chef, Hello Fresh, Blue Apron, Marley Spoon, and even Freshly (which is a different concept and only requires a microwave). We actually have a binder with all of our favorite recipe cards so that we can re-create the meals we enjoyed.
Here is our breakdown of three different brands, along with a highlight of a few of our favorite recipes from each (plus, scroll down for discount links!).
Of the meal services we've tried, Home Chef is our favorite. We've found Home Chef to be a happy medium between Hello Fresh and Blue Apron - interesting and delicious but also relatable and good for a variety of palettes. These are a few of our favorite saved recipes:
Hearty Steak & Red Wine Stew
I've been waiting for the weather to cool off to make this dish again! The red wine makes the difference in this hearty stew. Flavorful and warm, this will be a go-to this fall/winter.
Italian Sausage Stuffed Pizza Peppers
This was a fun take on stuffed peppers. Instead of Mexican spices, this recipe calls for marinara and Italian flavors.
Turkey & Avocado Tostadas
This may be our very favorite. It's a messy meal to eat but has fresh flavors, an interesting veggie (chayote), and is a pretty healthy way to have Mexican night.
Mediterranean Turkey Skillet
We've re-made this dish a couple of times now. It's hearty but healthy, with zucchini and turkey as a base. Add in some ricotta and feta, and it's perfect.
In our opinion, Hello Fresh is a great starter program. Generally speaking, the recipes use ingredients most people are familiar with, and the selection each week includes meals that you might see on the menu of a popular American chain restaurant. We've found Home Chef to have a better overall selection, but we have really enjoyed our Hello Fresh meals, too. Some of our faves:
Buttered Rosemary Strip Steak
We've saved a bunch of steak dishes with different butters or sauces. But one of the things I like most about this meal is the salad dressing! Overall, this is a fresh steak dish.
Adobo Loco Steak
I love the mix that goes under this steak when you plate it - it's hard to go wrong with corn, poblano, and potato. The Adobo sauce is warm and brings the whole dish together.
Sizzling Southwestern Chicken
The chicken in this dish is tasty, but honestly, the star is the "jumble" of sweet potato, peppers, lime, and feta. I basically want that as a side to everything from now on.
Pork Noodle Soup Bowl
This may be my all-time favorite meal from HF. It's flavorful but not heavy, and the broth is fantastic.
If you're looking to try new flavors or expand your culinary world, Blue Apron is the way to go. We have enjoyed our Blue Apron meals and have used the BA menu options to try meals that we might not otherwise buy groceries for. Some of our faves:
Seared Fish & Farro Salad
We have had pretty good luck with seafood from our meal kits, and this was a fresh and healthy meal we enjoyed. The fish wasn't "fishy" and the farro is full of veggies.
Florentine Roast Pork & Salsa Verde
We loved the addition of capers, and the mix of potatoes, zucchini and peppers made this a filling dish.
Even as meat-eaters, we have enjoyed some of Blue Apron's vegetarian dishes. Cauliflower is a great veggie to replace meat in a meal - it's hearty and the spice mix in this dish is warm and flavorful.
